The U.S. Department of State and the Government of Ghana are co-hosting the West African Cybersecurity and Cybercrime Workshop in Accra, Ghana from January 29 – 31 at the Holiday Inn, Accra.

According to US President Barack Obama: “This world—cyberspace—is a world that we depend on every single day… has made us more interconnected than at any time in human history.”

Among the key objectives on the agenda are:

a) Identifying key cybersecurity and cybercrime challenges, with a focus on mobile technologies;

b) Providing a common understanding of the fundamentals of investigations involving computers, cell phones, and the Internet;

c) Reviewing the framework for cybercrime and electronic evidence legislation based on the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime;

d) Understanding the importance of cyber forensics programs and capabilities, and;

e) Encouraging discussion, sharing experiences, and helping you assist each other in enhancing your abilities to effectively achieve and promote cybersecurity and mobile security best practices, combat cybercrime, collect and use electronic evidence, and cooperate internationally.

As part of my selection as Internet Freedom Fellow for 2013 from Ghana, I’ll be on the panel with Professor Kwame Karikari – Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa to discuss issues on Cybersecurity and Cybercrime – role of Bloggers and Policy Makers.
