Ghanaian mobile agriculture startup, AgroCenta wins TechCrunch’s Battlefield Africa Social Good Category in Nairobi, Kenya.

At the just ended Startup Battlefield Africa competition organized by TechCrunch with support from Facebook in Nairobi, Kenya; Ghana’s AgroCenta won the Social Good Category.

TechCrunch Startup Battlefield Africa 2017, sponsored by Facebook, searched for Sub-Saharan Africa’s best innovators, makers and technology entrepreneurs.

AgroCenta – a mobile farming and agriculture startup was founded in 2015 to improve the agricultural value chain in Ghana by two technology entrepreneurs Francis Obirikorang and Michael K. Ocansey.

The two critical problems the duo identified within the value chain were lack of access to the market for smallholder farmers in the rural areas, which subjected them to activities of exploitative, buying from middlemen and the lack of a coordinated truck delivery system to cart their commodities from farms to markets to sell.

AgroCenta’s idea is to solve these age-old problems by introducing an online sales platform that connected smallholder farmers directly to an online market, which has wider geographic size, to sell their commodities.

Four other startups: ConnectMedM-ShuleDot Learn, and Talent2Africa, all competed in this category but lost to the Ghanaian team.
