Nigerian-American Sci-Fi Author, Nnedi Okorafor shares on the power of African Science fiction in her recent TEDGlobal Talk.

Nigerian American author of African-based science fiction, fantasy and magical realism for both children and adults and a professor at the University at Buffalo, New York, Nnedi Okorafor gave a powerful talk at TEDGlobal in Arusha, Tanzania.

My science fiction has different ancestors — African ones,” says writer Nnedi Okorafor.

In between excerpts from her “Binti” series and her novel “Lagoon,” Okorafor discusses the inspiration and roots of her work — and how she opens strange doors through her Afrofuturist writing.

During her nine-minute talk, Okorafor carries that thought experiment further:

What if aliens came to Lagos, Nigeria?” And, the biggest one of all: “What if a Nigerian-American wrote science fiction?
