In 2022, Niche Cocoa, a Ghanaian chocolate manufacturer, opened a manufacturing plant in Franklin, Wisconsin, USA. This project marked the largest African food and beverage investment in the United States. Founded in 2011 by Edmund Poku, a Ghanaian native, Niche Cocoa has grown to become the largest cocoa processor in Ghana.

The decision to expand to the USA was driven by the significant market size and potential for developing both semi-finished and finished cocoa products. The facility in Franklin will initially employ over 24 people and will process cocoa cake into cocoa powder and finished chocolate products. This strategic move aims to add more value to Ghanaian cocoa beans, which are renowned for their premium quality.
Edmund Poku emphasised the importance of adding value upstream in the supply chain and leveraging the US market’s potential. The project also highlights the growing trend of African businesses expanding globally and the potential for further investments in the US
