MTN Ghana’s MoMo Boost Explained: Overdraft, Fees and Repayments

MoMo Boost helps eligible MTN Ghana customers complete transactions when their wallet balance is insufficient. Here is how its limits, fees, daily interest and automatic repayment work.
MTN MoMo Boost

MoMo Boost lets you complete a transaction when your Mobile Money balance is too low, but it comes with an access fee, daily interest, and automatic recovery from money entering your wallet.

MTN Mobile Money users in Ghana may now encounter MoMo Boost, the new name for the overdraft service previously known as XtraBalance.

The product is offered through a partnership between MobileMoney Fintech Limited and Forms Capital Limited. It is designed to cover the shortfall when an eligible customer tries to complete a Mobile Money transaction without enough money in their wallet.

Here is the important distinction: MoMo Boost is not free money, a grant or a conventional cash loan deposited for unrestricted use. It is a short-term credit facility that supplements an insufficient wallet balance for eligible transactions. You must repay the borrowed amount, fees, and interest.

What does MoMo Boost do?

Imagine that you want to make a GH¢200 payment but have only GH¢150 in your wallet. If you are registered, eligible, and have enough available credit, MoMo Boost may provide the GH¢50 difference so you can complete the transaction.

According to Forms Capital, the facility can support transfers, airtime and data purchases, merchant payments, bills, utilities, subscriptions and school fees. The company also says it automatically applies the overdraft when an eligible transaction exceeds the available wallet balance.

MoMo Boost is the rebranded version of XtraBalance. Forms Capital and MobileMoney Fintech announced the name change in July 2026, saying the underlying service and existing customers’ limits, histories and repayment arrangements would remain unchanged.

How much can you access?

The published product range is GH¢50 to GH¢5,000, according to Forms Capital. Each customer receives an individual credit limit based on factors including wallet usage, credit score and repayment history.

This means a particular customer may see a limit of GH¢1,500, but that is not the universal maximum for MoMo Boost. Another eligible customer may receive a lower or higher limit within the published range. MTN and Forms Capital can also review and change a customer’s limit.

A GH¢1,800 limit does not mean you automatically borrow the full amount. Interest is charged only on the amount you use, not the unused portion of your approved limit.

Who qualifies for MoMo Boost?

MTN’s support information says a customer must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have been an active MoMo customer for at least four months.
  • Have completed the applicable Know Your Customer requirements.
  • Meet the minimum internal credit-score requirement.

Meeting these basic conditions does not guarantee approval. The product terms allow Forms Capital and MobileMoney Fintech to assess account activity, transaction history, MTN service usage and previous repayment behaviour before approving registration or assigning a limit.

How to register or check your offer

MTN’s Help Center currently provides the following USSD route:

  1. Dial *170#.
  2. Select 6: Financial Services.
  3. Select 3: Loans.
  4. Select 4: MoMo Boost.

Forms Capital’s product page lists a different menu sequence, 5 > 3 > 4, and places the service under Financial Services > Advances > MoMo Boost in the MoMo app. USSD menus can change or display differently, so customers should follow the labels shown on their device rather than relying only on option numbers.

Registration is free, but overdraft usage is not.

What does MoMo Boost cost?

MTN’s Help Center lists two charges:

  • A one-time access fee of 5.05% on the amount drawn.
  • Daily interest of 0.05% on the outstanding balance.

For illustration, using GH¢1,800 would produce an initial access fee of GH¢90.90. If the entire GH¢1,800 remained outstanding for seven days, the daily interest would add approximately GH¢6.30, bringing the financing cost to about GH¢97.20 and the total repayment to approximately GH¢1,897.20.

If the same balance remained unpaid for 30 days, the daily interest would total about GH¢27, producing an estimated financing cost of GH¢117.90 and a total repayment of approximately GH¢1,917.90.

These calculations are illustrations based on the published rates. Treat the amount shown in the confirmation prompt at the time of a transaction as the applicable disclosure, especially because fees and terms may change.

How repayment works

Repayment is automatic. Money deposited or otherwise credited to the customer’s MoMo wallet can be deducted to reduce the outstanding facility, including fees and interest.

The formal terms state that the facility is due after use and must be fully repaid no later than 30 calendar days after disbursement. A later drawdown does not restart the repayment period attached to the original outstanding facility.

This automatic recovery has an important practical consequence. If someone sends money to your wallet for food, transport or another urgent expense while you owe MoMo Boost, some or all of that incoming money may first be applied to the debt.

Failure to repay can result in suspension or reduction of the overdraft limit. The terms also allow information about an ongoing default to be submitted to a licensed credit-reference bureau and permit debt-recovery measures.

Should you use it?

MoMo Boost can be useful for a necessary payment when the shortfall is small, and you know when repayment funds will arrive. It is less suitable for routine income extensions or for spending that can wait.

Before accepting an overdraft, check the amount being advanced, the access fee, the daily interest, the repayment deadline and how the next wallet deposit will be affected. Convenience is the product’s main benefit, but weigh it against a fee that starts at drawdown and interest that continues while the balance remains unpaid.
