The graduates trained across AI, data, software engineering and cybersecurity as Kenya works to become a producer, not merely a consumer, of emerging technology.
Kenya’s ambition to become an African artificial intelligence hub will ultimately depend on people, not policy documents. Moringa School has just added 1,761 newly trained learners to that equation.
The Nairobi-based technology training institution graduated the learners on July 29, 2026, in one of its largest talent showcases. The cohort completed programmes spanning artificial intelligence, data science, data analytics, cybersecurity, software engineering, DevOps, product design and data visualization.
That range matters. AI does not operate in isolation. It depends on data, software infrastructure, secure systems and products people can actually use. Training across those connected disciplines gives Kenya a broader workforce base as demand for advanced digital skills grows across Africa.
Kenya wants to build, govern and export AI
The graduation arrives as Kenya implements its Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2025–2030 and expands investment in digital infrastructure and technology skills.
Speaking at the event, ICT Secretary, Mary Kerema, representing ICT Principal Secretary John Tanui, framed the country’s ambition clearly: “Kenya has made a deliberate choice: we will not be passive consumers of the intelligent economy; we will be its builders, governors and exporters.”
That is a stronger goal than simply encouraging companies to adopt AI tools. It means developing local talent capable of creating systems, setting standards, managing risks and building products suited to African markets.
For Kenya, the opportunity includes more than technology jobs. A credible AI ecosystem could support local startups, strengthen public services, improve agriculture and transport, and position the country to export digital expertise.
The harder question is whether training, employment and entrepreneurship can grow together.
More than 60 employers attend career fair
Moringa paired the graduation ceremony with a career fair at Nairobi’s ASK Grounds. More than 60 employers, recruiters and technology companies attended, giving graduates a direct route to conversations about jobs and industry needs.
This connection is important because Africa’s digital-skills conversation often focuses on enrolment and graduation numbers while saying less about what happens next. Producing thousands of trained candidates is valuable, but the real outcome is whether those skills lead to jobs, viable startups or technology that solves local problems.
Moringa School Chief Executive Nikki Germany said employers are looking for people who can do more than operate software.
“The challenge is no longer just technical capability,” Germany said. “Graduates must be able to collaborate, make informed decisions and continue learning as technology changes.”
That reflects the reality of the current technology market. Tools and programming frameworks can change quickly. Workers who understand problems, communicate across teams and adapt their knowledge are more likely to remain useful than those trained narrowly around one platform.
Students demonstrate locally relevant technology
The graduates also presented projects designed around real problems rather than abstract classroom exercises.
One project, Nairobi Floodguard, uses data science to analyze flood-prone areas and improve matatu route optimization. Flooding regularly disrupts movement in Nairobi, making better location data and route planning potentially useful to commuters, transport operators and city
planners.
Another project, TerraFold Trace, is a software engineering platform designed to improve traceability across agricultural supply chains. Better traceability can help producers, buyers and other participants understand where goods come from and how they move through the market.
These projects offer a glimpse of what an AI-ready workforce should mean in practice: using technical skills to address transport, climate resilience, agriculture and other challenges close to home.
Valedictorian Thomas Amuti, a data science graduate, said the programme prepared learners to work on real-world problems while reinforcing the need for continuous learning.
Graduation is the beginning, not the result
The figure of 1,761 graduates is significant, but it should not become the only measure of success.
Kenya will need to track how many graduates secure relevant work, create businesses, contribute to research or develop products with measurable value. Employers must also be willing to invest in junior talent instead of demanding years of experience from entry-level applicants.
There is a wider lesson here for African governments and training institutions. AI readiness cannot be achieved through short courses alone. It requires reliable digital infrastructure, access to computing resources, strong foundational education, experienced mentors, supportive employers and funding for locally built products.
It also requires governance. If Kenya wants to become a builder and exporter of AI, its workforce must understand privacy, cybersecurity, bias, accountability and the social impact of automated systems alongside technical development.
A useful signal for Africa’s digital economy
Moringa School’s graduating class shows that demand for technology training remains strong and that learners are moving into disciplines beyond traditional software development.
The combination of technical programmes, employer access and problem-focused student projects is encouraging. It brings education closer to the needs of the market and the realities of Kenyan communities.
But here’s the thing: an AI-ready workforce is not created on graduation day. It is built when trained people are given the opportunity to practice, earn, experiment and lead.
Kenya now has 1,761 more learners prepared to enter that process. The next test is turning their skills into sustainable careers and locally built technology that makes the country an active producer in the intelligent economy.
