Young Ghanaian youths gain hands-on experience in Germany through a unique internship program that bridges skills and cultures.

Ten young Ghanaian youths, comprising eight men and two women, are currently embarking on what may become one of the most transformative chapters of their lives.

Far from home, they’ve landed in Germany, scattered across cities like Bochum, Detmold, Lemgo, and Münster. For three months, they’ll be part of an internship program that not only sharpens their professional skills but also introduces them to a new culture, a different way of life, and invaluable global perspectives.

This unique opportunity didn’t happen by chance. It’s the result of a collaborative effort between several organizations committed to empowering young talent and fostering international cooperation. The program is supported by Signal Iduna, Senior Expert Service (SES), the Jakob-Christian-Adam Stiftung, the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Ghana (AHK Ghana), and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. Together, these institutions are investing in the future of youth—and by extension, the future of Ghana and Germany.

Building Skills Beyond Borders

For the ten Ghanaian interns, this is more than a professional training program—it’s a door to the world.

Selected through a competitive process, the participants come from various educational and technical backgrounds. Many are studying or have completed training in fields like engineering, ICT, logistics, and business administration. The internship placements reflect their diverse interests, matching them with German companies that align with their career goals.

Whether working in factories, office environments, or tech-focused settings, the interns are learning through hands-on experience. This real-world exposure is giving them the chance to apply what they’ve studied, observe best practices, and gain insight into how industries operate in a different country.

Beyond hard skills, they’re developing soft skills that are just as critical—teamwork, time management, cross-cultural communication, and adaptability. In short, they’re becoming global professionals.

Partnership That Crosses Continents

What makes this program truly remarkable is the strong collaboration behind it. Signal Iduna, a major German insurance and financial services company, has played a vital role in supporting the interns and ensuring their well-being during their stay.

Senior Expert Service (SES), Germany’s leading organization for voluntary expert assignments, contributes by facilitating training and knowledge sharing, while the Jakob-Christian-Adam Stiftung provides financial and logistical support.

The Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Ghana (AHK Ghana) has been instrumental on the ground, identifying promising candidates, preparing them for the journey, and coordinating the match between interns and host companies. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy complements the partnership with governmental backing, which helps ensure the long-term sustainability of such initiatives.

Together, these partners are demonstrating that when different sectors- private, public, and nonprofit—collaborate, the results can be truly impactful.

The Impact: More Than Just a Resume Boost

The benefits of the internship program extend beyond technical skills. The interns broaden their worldview through direct exposure to new technologies, structured work environments, and professional standards in Germany. They apply what they’ve learned in Ghana to real-world settings, gaining practical knowledge that strengthens their competence and confidence.

These internships also contribute to the growing connection between Ghana and Germany. As young professionals from Ghana work in German companies, they form new relationships and professional networks that extend across borders. These interactions promote mutual understanding and create opportunities for ongoing collaboration.

German companies benefit from the presence of the interns, who bring new perspectives and a strong work ethic. At the same time, the interns gain first-hand experience in international business environments, giving them insights into workplace culture, expectations, and processes that differ from their own.

This program reflects a clear exchange of knowledge and culture. It supports the development of globally minded professionals and reinforces the growing partnership between the two countries. The shared commitment between Ghana and Germany to invest in youth and skills development strengthens their economic and social ties in a practical, meaningful way.
